COMMENT. The name Condylognatha should be regarded as fitting in circumscription the taxon uniting Thysanoptera and Arthroidignatha only, in spite of the fact that originally Condylognatha included also a taxon Conorrhyncha Börner 1904 (Thaumatoxenia/fg1), which recently is attributed to Diptera. Thaumatoxenia Breddin & Börner 1904 was at that time newly discovered and not investigated enough; Börner (1904) at first placed it into the order Arthroidignatha (which was named "Rhynchota") in his Condylognatha, in his Acercaria, in his "Hemimetabola"; this should be regarded as an error, but not an opinion about classification. In the subsequent paper (Börner 1907) he moved Thaumatoxenia to the order Diptera in Holometabola. The name Condylognatha has older circumscriptional synonyms – Hemiptera, Proboscidea and Hemimeroptera. In the modern literature, the name Hemiptera is never used for Condylognatha, but is often used either for Arthroidignatha Spinola 1850, or for Heteroptera Latreille 1810. Because of this, usage of the name Hemiptera for Condylognatha can lead to confusion. A forgotten name Proboscidea Scopoli 1763 has a widely known junior homonym – Proboscidea Illiger 1811 (elefants); besides this, the same name Proboscidea Latreille 1809 was attributed to a taxon in Diptera; the same name was attributed also to some other animal taxa. The name Hemimeroptera Clairville 1798 probably never was used as valid, and now is forgotten. Valid name for Hemiptera sensu Linnaeus 1758 should be Condylognatha Borner 1904, which is recently the most accepted among all circumscriptional synonyms. |
