Autapomorphies of Afrobaetodes. (1) Tergalii are shifted to ventral side of abdomen ( the same in Thraulobaetodes and Baetodes/g3). Tergalii retain ability to rhythmical respiratory movements: they move synchronously in median direction under abdomen. Tergalii VII are lost, thus only 6 pairs are present. (2) 1st segment of maxillary palp with a distal-lateral filamentous gill process. Unique apomorphy. ?not in all? Maxillary palp is 2-segmented. Characters of Afrobaetodes of unclear phylogenetic status. (3) Claws with one row of denticles (see Index of characters [1.2.21]). ?? median process on abdominal segments ?? () Hind wing, if present of "Centroptilum-type" – ....?? (see Index of characters [2.2.60]). Hind wings can be well-developed in male and vestigial in female (in pugio [A.] et al.), or lost in both sexes (in species from Black Volta River). Plesiomorphies of Afrobaetodes. On fore wing in each space always only 1 marginal intercalary can be present [see Liberevenata (2)] (unlike Baetovectata – see Index of characters [2.2.55]). In subimago of both sexes all segments of all tarsi are covered with pointed microlepides (see Index of characters [2.2.75], [2.2.78.2], [2.2.83]). In mature larva which is ready to moult to subimago, buds of subimaginal gonostyli are folded under larval by the "Afroptilum-type": 2nd and 3rd segments of gonostylus are directed laterally [see Turbanoculata (13)] (unlike Baetovectata – see Index of characters [2.3.9]). Gonovectes retain free median ends, which are not fused with penial bridge [see Liberevenata (4)] (see Index of characters [2.3.16a]). Variable characters of Afrobaeodes. |
Size. Fore wing length ?–? mm (see Tetramerotarsata).
Distribution. Afrotropical Region.
