3) OPINION
The name Myriapoda is generally accepted for the taxon which was named so by Latreille 1802. Earlier, Latreille (1796) used this name in French spelling, as Myriapodes, and applied it to a taxon of wider circumscription. Burmeister (1830) used both names as Latin ones: Myriapodes for a wider taxon, and Myriapoda for a subordinated taxon (as a synonym of "Myriapodes trachales"). For the purpose of stability of the name Myriapoda, this concept should be accepted: the name Myriapodes Latreille 1796 should be regarded as a separate Latin name, but not as a French spelling of the Latin name Myriapoda. This is an exception of the rule: In other cases original French spelling of an old Latin name should be regarded as available with original authorship, date and circumscription, but with subsequent latinization of its ending. |
