COMMENT. The name Mandibulata Snodgrass 1935 is generally accepted at the present time. However, this name is preoccupied: in the first half of XIX century there was widely used the same name Mandibulata Clairville 1798 for one of groups of winged insects (see above); besides this, the same name Mandibulata Latreille 1825 was suggested for biting lice (Mallophaga – see above). The oldest name of the taxon uniting Eucrustacea, Myriapoda and Hexapoda is Polygnatha Latreille 1820 (originally Polygnathes, in French spelling); however, in the original publication the type Polygnathes did not include parasitic eucrustaceans and sucking lice, which were arttributed to the type Pseudognathes; besides this, in earlier works the same name Polygnatha (originally Polygnathes, in French spelling) was used for a small taxon which included only terrestrial eucrustaceans and was opposed to insects and myriapods (Dumeril 1805) |
