COMMENT. Till the XIX century animals and plants were considered as two independent taxa of the same rank as the third taxon which comprised objects of inanimate nature; in the Linnaean classifications (Linnaeus 1735–1796) the empire Natura was divided into three kingdoms – Animalia (animals), Vegetabilia (plants) and Lapides (minerals). The concept of a taxon uniting all living organisms (i.e. animals and plants) was first expressed by Lamarck (1801–1822), however he did not give a formal name to this taxon. So the senior names for this taxon are objective synonyms Somobialia and Vitalia published in French spelling as «l'Empire Somobial» and «l'Empire Vital» in the book about system of nature by Rafinesque (1815).
