Here are two different databases: (1) "EPHEMEROPTERA OF THE WORLD" — a catalogue of literature about each mayfly taxon; (2) "CLADOENDESIS OF EPHEMEROPTERA" — the most recent phylogenetic classification of supra-species mayfly taxa. These databases are connected by numerous links, but at the same time are independent and can be used separately one from another.
ALPHABETIC INDICES
All species-group names are listed in an alphabetic index, which is divided into 26 files from "a" to "z"; to open these files, press an underlined small letter ( a , b , etc.) at the top of each file (see top of this page). A yellow button at the left from each taxon name links it with a corresponding file of the catalogue "Ephemeroptera of the World"; an underlined name on blue background or a blue button () behind each taxon name links it with a corresponding file of the "Cladoendesis of Ephemeroptera".
All supra-species names (genus-group names, typified names and non-typified names) are listed in an alphabetic index; to open this file, press Gen. at the top of each file (see top of this page). To find a family-group name, press a yellow button at the left of its type-genus name in the index of supra-species names.
CLADOENDESIS OF EPHEMEROPTERA
This database contains information about all holophylums and plesiomorphons of Ephemeropetera, which is possible to reconstruct at the modern level of knowledge, basing on the Darwin's theory, the Hennig's phylogenetic analysis and the principles of cladoendesis (but not on parsimony and other non-scientific principles). Each file of this catalogue is titled as "CLADOENDESIS OF EPHEMEROPTERA". As well as any phylogenetic theory, the database "Cladoendesis of Ephemeroptera" reflects opinion of a certain author, and can not be objective; in this respect is basically differs from the objective catalogue "Ephemeroptera of the World". The database "Cladoendesis of Ephemeroptera" is based on the book by N.J. Kluge 2004 "The phylogenetic systen of Ephemeroptera" and includes later additions and corrections made by the same author.
To see the general phylogenetic classification, press at the top of each file (see top of this page); blue buttons at the right of each taxon name link it with corresponding file of the "Cladoendesis of Ephemeroptera", which are linked one with another by blue buttons , and are linked with the catalogue "Ephemeroptera of the World" by yellow buttons .
INDEX OF CHARACTERS
The "Index of characters" represents an important component of the layout used here. But the reader should be prevented from possible mistakes: 1) This is an index of characters, but not an account of them; it only sends the reader to certain places of the main text, but does not give final information about taxa and their characters. For example, if there is written "Larva … flattened dorsoventrally: Acanthametropus/fg1 (6), Ametropus (1), Chiloporter (2), Heptagennota (1)", it does not mean that larvae of these taxa are especially flattened, and others are not; here are only indicated places in the main text, where something is written about flatness of larva (the character No.6 in the characteristics of Acanthametropus/fg1, etc.). It is something like an alphabetic index, but with subjects accounted not alphabetically, but according to parts of the body. 2) While this index somewhat resembles a matrix of characters used in numeric cladistics, do not try to count the characters in this index! Any counting characters is an absolutely useless job (see General principles of biological systematics).
NOMENCLATURE
Instead of traditional rank-based nomenclature, here is used a system of two non-ranking nomenclatures: the hierarchical nomenclature based on the ICZN, and the circumscriptional nomenclature (see Principles of nomenclature); the first one is applied for each taxon, the second — for a few taxa only.
PRESENT CONDITION
Work on the database "Cladoendesis of Ephemeroptera" is in progress. Now this database contains that taxa which are described in the book "The phylogenetic system of Ephemeroptera", but does not contain most taxa of Turbanoculata (= Baetidae s.str.) and Leptophlebia/fg1 (= Leptophlebiidae, or Leptophlebioidea), which are under construction.
