MODERN STATUS:  the oldest name of a non-accepted taxon.

COMMENT. The name Solifugae with authorship "Sundevall 1833" is often wrongly applied not to the order established by Sundevall under this name, but to his genus Galeodes Oliv. = Solpuga Licht. Fabr., which corresponds to the modern order Mycetophora Pocock 1893.

Sundeval (1833) wrote in the footnote on the page 11:
"Nomine Solifugae veteres animal qvoddam venenatum appellaverunt. - Hoc nomen adoptavi ut omnes Ordines naturales hujus Classis nominibus propriis usitatis designarentur, qvae, sicuti nomina Araneae et Acari, etiam adhiberi possent, si Ordinem qvandam ut unum genus considerare velles. Solifugae nomen eo potius adhibui, qvod animal ita appellatum, consensu Entomologorum, illius esset generis, qvod Galeoden vocavit Olivier, qvodqve hujus est Ordinis. Praeterea nomen Soli-fuga indolem horum animalium, latebras obscuras amantium, exprimit. Plinius idem Solpuga vocat, qvo autem nomine, potius forsan adhibendo, non usus sum, qvod idem synonymon recentius est generis Galeodis. - Nomen Ordinis 3:tii, e nomine triviali speciei notissimi mutuatum, neqve omnibus placebit; sed aliud non praesto erat."
