Autapomorphy of Castanophlebia.

(1) In male imago each lobe of penis has a characteristic shape with internal spine (Peters 1997: Fig.6–8).

Character of Castanophlebia of unclear phylogenetic status.

() Labrum with median incision narrowed, lacking denticles [see Atalophleboculata (2)] (see Index of characters [1.1.16]).

() Glossae are curved over ventro-laterally (Peters & Edmunds 1964: Fig.68). Non-unique character (see Index of characters [1.1.50]).

Plesiomorphiy of Castanophlebia: difference from Atalophlebolinguata.

Hypopharynx without lateral projections.

Other plesiomorphies of Castanophlebia.

In larva, imago and subimago patella-tibial suture is developed on middle and hind legs, being absent on fore legs only (see Index of characters [1.2.18], ibid. [2.2.82]).

Imaginal and subimaginal claws of all legs are ephemeropteroid (only in selected species claws of fore leg of male imago have shortened hook, so are nearly blunt) (see Index of characters [2.2.85]).

On fore wing fork of MA is asymmetrical [see Leptophlebia/fg1 (5)] (see Index of characters [2.2.43]).

Each tergalius I–VII has both lamellae narrow-lanceolate [see Leptophlebia/fg1 (10)] (in calida [Castanophlebia] and sp.n. retains bilamellate structure, but in albicauda [C.] is reduced so that consists of a single narrow lamella).

Size. Fore wing length 7–9 mm.

Distribution. South Africa.

Nominal species in Castanophlebia/g(1):

albicauda Barnard 1940 [Castanophlebia]

calida Barnard 1932 [Castanophlebia] — typus nominis Castanophlebia --/
